Weather Forecast and What To Wear for Reunion Weekend
We've had a few questions about the weather and what to wear for reunion weekend, so here goes ...
What's the weather going to be like?
The 10-day forecast on TWC shows the following:
Friday - Isolated thunderstorms, temperature high 81
Saturday - Isolated thunderstorms, temperature high 80
Sunday - Partly cloudy, temperature high 76
Looks like it should be a good weekend, but I would keep checking the weather forecast, just to be safe. You know how long range forecasts can be!
What to wear:
Friday daytime and mixer - jeans, slacks, capris or shorts are a good choice for both the tour of the old high school and the mixer at Spinoni's, depending on the temperature. We'll be in the bar section of Spinoni's, which could be crowded - read warm ladies! - but it opens onto a patio, weather permitting, so sweaters or jackets might be a good idea.
Saturday daytime - slacks, jeans or shorts are a good choice for the tour of the new high school and lunch at IV's.
Saturday night - dress is business casual. Ladies - nice slacks, capris, skirts, dresses, etc. - I'm sure there will be some of everything! Men - slacks, knit, sport or dress shirts with collars, no jacket or tie required. The room will be crowded, but it opens onto a big open hallway reception area, so it should be comfortable for everyone.
Sunday - very casual at the winery! Jeans, carpris, shorts and t-shirts are perfect! Temps will probably be a little cooler - a perfect autumn day to be outside in Southern Illinois, just for you!
Be comfortable - Be casual - Be yourself!

Top 40 Reasons I Can't Go To The 40th High School Reunion
We've had really great feedback from our classmates and friends as we've attempted to reconnect with everyone and get addresses for invitations. Sometimes though, we've just had to laugh at the things some people say in response to our calls and emails. Some can't be printed here -- or anywhere! -- but here are a few of our favorites.
- Shh, my spouse doesn’t know I’m that old.
- I still have a 10:00 pm curfew issued by my parents.
- I would have to get my tooth cleaned.
- I don't have a stamp to mail my reservation.
- Cellulite. freaks. me. OUT!
- Wal-Mart is having a sale that weekend.
- I don't see an early-bird special on the menu.
- I’m afraid my science teacher may be there.
- Terriers give me hives.
- Old people make me nervous.
- I can’t read the invitation. Use LARGE PRINT.
- I'm too old for that.
- I don’t attend any functions not sanctioned by AARP.
- I was too fat, so I went on a diet, and now I have too many wrinkles!
- That's my regular bingo night.
- The only hair I have left is growing out of my ears, nose and chin.
- I'm afraid I might get grabaged.
- I won't know anyone there.
- I haven't even finished my term paper for Government yet.
- I won't recognize anyone.
- I've changed too much.
- Uh ... I'm in witness protection.
- It's duck hunting season in Alaska.
- No one will recognize me.
- My face lift hasn't healed yet.
- I still owe a library fine for Tale of Two Cities.
- My trophy wife is at the gym.
- I can't get a babysitter.
- No one will sit with me.
- I can't get a flight from Makanda.
- I hated high school.
- My mom says I'm STILL grounded.
- I was not popular in high school.
- Steve Jobs invited me to dinner that night.
- I live too far away.
- My dog ate my registration form.
- Reunions are just for cheerleaders and jocks.
- I'm pregnant.
- I'll just sit back and wait for the 50th reunion.
- Now what was your reason again?

The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same . . .
There probably have been some changes in Carbondale since the last time you were here -- even if it wasn't that long ago. Depending on when you left, you may or may not find the places you remember. And some of you may remember places I never even knew about, since I was away for thirty years!
Here's a list of some of the more noticeable changes to the Carbondale landscape since 1970!
GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
Lincoln Junior High School is g-o-n-e, as in knocked down and hauled away!
Booby's has gone out of business.
Kaleidoscope has gone out of business!
Hangar Nine burned down, but is now under construction!
The Baptist Church on the corner of Main St. and Illinois Ave. moved to Giant City Road in a brand new building.
Mugsy McGuire's is no more! A new Walgreen's is under construction in that location.
The Hallmark store in Murdale is gone.
The Kroger on the West Side of town is gone.
Crustado's is gone.
MOVED
Pagliai's Pizza has moved -- to the other side of the old Hangar Nine location -- so now it's right across from the Dairy Queen on the north side of the new Hangar Nine.
The Subway on West Main has moved to the old Hardee's on the other side of the street.
EXPANDED
The Apple Tree gift shop is still in the same location, but there is a new owner, and it's expanded!
NEW
Comfort Inn has built just across the street from the Holiday Inn/Houlihan's (where our dinner will be on Saturday night -- Holiday Inn, not Comfort Inn.)
Buffalo Wild Wings is located on East Main, just past Giant City Road.
South from the intersection of Hwy. 13 and Giant City Road there have been some additions in recent years including - Moe's Southwest Grill, Fujiyama Japanese Steak House (and Sushi too!) and Kohl's.
There's a mini Starbuck's in Kroger on Giant City Road.
In the area around The Mall has turned into a fast food crossroads - restaurants are Steak & Shake, Garfield's in the mall, Applebee's, and Panera (hooray!), Burger King and Moe's Southwest Grill.
The shopping area across from The Mall now has Barnes & Noble with a Starbuck's (hooray!), Best Buy and Dick's Sporting Goods, Aldi's and Chili's Grill & Bar is under construction, as well as longtime residents Walmart, Taco Bell, McDonald's, Arby's, Subway and Long John Silver. There's also Lowe's and Hobby Lobby (hooray!) And there's a T J Maxx under construction in that area too!
The historic Town Square area is still lively -- places to eat are old and new like The Newell House, Tres Hombres, Global Gourmet, the Longbranch and Thai Taste. There's also an art gallery, Art Lovers Trading Company, next to the Newell House. The Co-Op has moved to the west side of town.
The Co-Op is now located in the Murdale Shopping Center, in the former location of the old Woolworth's of our childhood.
Larry's House of Cakes (from Marion) has opened a new location in the old Crustado's space.
The Carbondale Farmer's Market is still going strong in the Westown Shopping Center parking lot. It's open on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. - noon. If you are looking for people you know, it's the place to see and be seen!
West of Carbondale, at the intersection of Country Club Road and Hwy. 13 is a new Walmart -- yeah, one was not enough! It's technically in Murphysboro, so they sell liquor in the store -- which is still a no-no in C'dale.
The Varsity Theater is home to Stage Company, the live community theater group.
STILL GOING STRONG!
The Dairy Queen
Italian Village
Denny's
710 Bookstore
Quatro's
The Giant City Lodge
Arnold's Market
El Greco
Gatsby's
Midland Inn
Mississippi Flyway
Tom's Place in DeSoto

How Many Class of '70 Grads Does It Take To Stuff An Invitation Into An Envelope?
Who are these people and what are they talking about?
Here's a good idea! Dust off your yearbooks and take a trip down memory lane before the reunion.
The pictures will help bring faces and places back into focus.
On the other hand, the words written by friends will often leave you wondering what the heck they were talking about!
We keep these yearbooks handy when we're working on reunion projects and you can bet we'll recognize each and every one of you the minute you walk in.
... unless you've changed in the past forty years.
No? I didn't think so. We haven't either! ;)

When Will My Invitation and Reservation Packet Arrive?
... taking it to The Wall! |
Months of meetings and tons of plans are finally coming together and we're getting really excited ourselves, because ... well ... you're coming aren't you?
Every time we find another missing classmate (I told you how busy Nancy has been!) ... see another old friend pop up on Facebook (a new face almost everyday!) ... or receive a check in the mail (thanks to everyone, near and far, who is doing what they can to make this happen!) ... we know that all of our work will make our reunion 40 years worth of fun!
We've had a few queries lately from concerned classmates, afraid that they may have missed out on the mailing.
Well, not to worry!
The invitation and reservation forms are being finalized right this minute -- well, as soon as I finish this email, I'll be back to work on the forms.
Anyway, next week we're planning a big stuff-the-packet extravaganza! We've got details ... answers ... and questions ... about everything you need to know for the reunion, along with a reservation form to fill out and return by snail mail. (Sorry, no online reservations until everyone has a computer and I master another computer skill set.)
In the meantime, here are a couple of things to think about:
- Friday evening - casual get-together at Spinoni's @ 7 pm - until, with a cash bar
- Saturday morning - take a tour of new high school (former East Campus location) @ 11 am
- Saturday lunch - join the group planning to go to Italian Village after the tour, if you like
- Saturday evening - social hour, buffet dinner (reservations only), music and lots of conversation!
- Saturday afternoon - on your own to explore the wine trail, take a hike, visit favorite places
- Sunday afternoon - stay, if you can, for The Ivas John Band concert at Rustle Hill Winery from 3-6 pm - Charlie Morrill is the band's drummer! (and we hear Chuck Cochran will be sitting-in to play too) - a reunion bonus!
- The Holiday Inn is holding a block of rooms for us, but you must make hotel reservations by August 24, 2010, and ask for the CCHS Class of '70 Reunion rate of $109/night.
- The Hampton Inn is just down the street from the Holiday Inn and within easy walking distance.
- Additional lodging info is listed on past posts to this website.
And watch THIS SPACE - we'll be listing the names of everyone coming to the reunion, just as soon as those reservations are returned.
Or, if you just can't wait ...
Leave a comment ... right here! ... right now!
Are you planning to be here?
Tell us who you want to see when you first walk into the room?
Let the conversation begin ... right HERE! ... right NOW!

Nancy's Been Busy!
In the past couple of weeks, Nancy has been in touch with this long list of people by email, Facebook, phone calls, answering machines messages and whatever method she can use to find addresses and phone numbers for our classmates!
And this list doesn't even include all of the of the calls to people with "similar names" or are living at old addresses from our files. I'm not sure, but after chatting with Nancy, some of them may be coming to our reunion anyway!

Good Friends, Good Times!
Marcy, Jan, Chanda, Gina and Kim
It was a busy week for Chanda -- lunch here, dinner there, all around the town! We love friends who come to town and make a point of getting together with those of us who live here.
But it will be even more fun when you all show up at the same time -- September 24-25! We're doing our best to get everyone together for a chance to sit and chat, remember old times, and catch up on the past 40 years!
The reservation forms will be in the mail soon! Please be sure to read every word, because we have a couple of special surprises for you.
If you are planning to come to C'dale and still need a hotel reservation, remember to mention our block of rooms at the Holiday Inn, and remember to make those reservations by August 24th for that rate!

Lunch With Good Friends
Nancy and I got to have lunch with Gina and Chanda today. Guess what we talked about?
Right! How plans are coming for the reunion . . . people we have heard from . . . people who are still missing . . . who's coming in September . . . do we need more helpful donations (YE$) . . . when will the mailing go out for reservations?
So many people have been in touch through Facebook, email and phone -- but we are still hoping to find missing friends. No one should miss this chance to reconnect with old friends. Take a look at the list again and send us addresses, phone numbers or leads for anyone you know how to find.
If you're still on the fence about coming for the reunion, why not call or email someone you would love to get together with and make plans to come together. I will, if you will!
We're busy working on the reservation packet and it will be in the mail to everyone in a couple of weeks. If you didn't receive a Save-the-Date card a few months ago, please check with Nancy to make sure we have you correctly on our mailing list.
Can't wait to see you in September!

Join them and get in on the conversation!
Update #1 - oops! Nancy pointed out I forgot to add our names to the Facebook list, along with some recently Found people. Others are added regularly.
Names in parenthesis are included to help identify people by the names we knew in high school. As we have discovered, names are subject to a wide variety of changes over the years, and not just for women changing names at marriage.
If you are searching on Facebook for someone listed below, do not include the part of the name in parenthesis.

Walker's Bluff Winery - You've Just Gotta See It to Believe It!
Walker's Bluff is another winery you won't want to miss if you've been away from Carbondale for a while. It is located north of town -- take Hwy. 13 to Reed Station Rd. and go north until you reach the stop sign, turn right and follow the signs. It will seem like you are headed to the middle of nowhere, but then you're there. Take the whole family, because there is something for everyone to enjoy. Vineyards, a pond for fishing, a playground, a giant outdoor chess board, a playground, an outdoor amphitheater for concerts and movies, picnic tables, furniture made from trees, animals sculpted from more trees and . . . well, you'll just have to see for yourself. Oh, and there's a beautiful restaurant open for weekend brunch and dinner too.

HELP GINA IDENTIFY THE MYSTERY GIRL
IN HER KINDERGARTEN CLASS
IN HER KINDERGARTEN CLASS
BE THE FIRST TO LEAVE A COMMENT
WITH HER NAME AND
WITH HER NAME AND
WIN A PRIZE !!!!!
This is Gina Barringer Engbring's copy of the Kindergarten picture from Lincoln School 1957-58 -- a group of sun-squinty future Class of 70 Terriers. Gina brought it to one of our reunion meetings and said she remembered everyone in the picture, except the tall blond girl in the center of the middle row. Just in case you can't tell, that's Gina, third from the left, right next to the mystery girl. Can you identify the blond girl next to Gina? Do you recognize anyone else? Were you in this class too? Leave a comment below with the name of the mysterious blond, along with your own name. If you are the first commenter to correctly identify her, we'll send you a prize -- cause we've already got your address . . . don't we?

SEARCHING FOR
MISSING CLASSMATES
AS OF TODAY (7-29-10)
AND WITH YOUR HELP
WE'LL FIND ALL OF THEM!
Nancy Martin Gonzenbach (who may soon be opening her own Detective Agency!) has coordinated an extensive search to locate a current address for every member of our class, both from school records and our previous reunion records. You can imagine how difficult this has been, given the amount of time since our last reunion.
Big thanks to Rod Rich and Janet Burger Vaught and all of you who searched phone books, local addresses, called, Googled, emailed, Tweeted, Facebooked, or whatever -- for helping Nancy with this big task!
Feel free to leave a comment here with information about anyone you may be able to help locate.
Please read through the list and send an email to Nancy - nancyg428@msn.com - if you know how or where to find any of these people.
PLEASE KEEP LOOKING!
